Did you know that the oldest K-12 online programs and schools in the United States are between 15 and 20 years old? This coincides with the widespread use of the Internet in the late 1990s when virtual state schools and online schools increased in number and improved in quality. The early forerunners included the Florida Virtual School, Connections Academy, and K12 Inc., and many of these schools increased in Michigan, Georgia, and Idaho.
Since the first online schools were established, many more types were developed, including online charter schools with students across the United States and autonomous schools and districts offering online courses. The evolution also included programs shifting from mostly online classes to blended programs with onsite and online components. Indeed, there’s a wide range of online learning models that parents and their high school-ready children can choose from!
The most common online education programs in the United States are:
- Virtual academies are online public schools offered in many states and with state-certified teachers and educators at the helm.
- District-run programs are online charter schools administered by education districts. Students can study at home through an online curriculum but may be able to participate in extracurricular activities, including sports tournaments.
- Blended schools combine in-person learning in a physical location and online learning. Students have to attend face-to-face classes in a traditional setting for a few days a week; the days vary depending on the school. Blended schools typically use the K-12 program and curriculum.
- Insight Schools are tuition-free public schools that specialize in providing students with the appropriate support and resources designed to engage and empower them. Students are typically given an Individualized Learning Plan (ILP).
- Destination Career Academics and Programs are also tuition-free programs available in selected states. These combine traditional high school courses with electives designed to provide students with relevant knowledge and skills in their chosen industry.
Many well-known private colleges and universities also offer online high schools, such as Stanford University. Indeed, many of the best online high schools in America are privately-funded institutions!
But why are online high schools becoming more popular? We’re not only talking about the increase in enrollment in online programs due to the coronavirus pandemic either! Before the pandemic (and the culture of fear that came with it), online learning was already on the rise.
Online learning among K-12 students in general and high school students, in particular, is a growing trend. In a Keeping Pace with K–12 Online Learning report, the number of students enrolled in the 2009-2010 academic year was 1.5 million, and only 50% of U.S. Districts offered blended or online courses. For the 2013-2014 period, the numbers increased to 2.7 million and 75%, respectively.
Surveys reveal that brick-and-mortar schools are expanding their services by offering online schooling for the following reasons:
- To offer courses that aren’t available in the traditional setting
- To offer college-level courses or advance placement
- To address the twin issues of a growing student population and limited physical space
- To resolve scheduling conflicts among students and teachers
- To meet the specific needs of certain cohorts of students
- To allow struggling students to retake their courses
The changing preference of parents also spurs the increasing popularity of online high schools. The most commonly cited reasons are the poor learning environment, strong objections to the lessons being taught, and the view that their children aren’t being challenged enough in brick-and-mortar schools. Many parents also cited their religious beliefs as part of the reasons for pulling their children from traditional classrooms and into virtual classrooms.
Students are also choosing online and blending learning programs for largely academic reasons, and many of their reasons reflect their parents’ reasons, too. They typically fall into these categories:
- Students who have lost interest in attaining satisfactory academic performance because they believe that traditional schools aren’t a good fit for them.
- Students who become disengaged and bored because the traditional learning environment doesn’t provide them with sufficient challenge. But they are doing well in academics except for the lack of learning stimulation.
- Students who want to catch up on their education for one reason or another, such as going back to school following years of dropping out.
Indeed, there are many advantages to online high schools that parents and children should consider!
- You can set your own learning pace as a student for the most part.
- You can access the learning modules for as long as you have an Internet connection. Your special needs, location, and circumstances in life will not matter as much in online learning.
- You can enjoy the benefits of artificial one-on-one teaching.
But there are some potential drawbacks, such as student willingness and suitability, reading skills and comprehension, and social interactions, which should be considered. Fortunately, these are minor issues with easy solutions.
The bottom line: Parents and their high school-aged children should seriously consider the best online high schools outlined here! You will find that, indeed, there’s more to it than meets the eye, and most of them are positive.
The sheer number of online high schools made it a challenge for us to choose the cream of the crop. We made it easier by considering these factors in shortlisting and compiling the 35 best of the best.
- Accreditation: The goal of accreditation is to ensure that the individual school meets the acceptable level of quality recognized by the accreditation agencies on the regional and national levels.
- Curriculum: We also checked for the relevance and compliance of each of the school’s curriculum with the state standards for high school students. Most of these schools allow the students’ active participation in the classes and encourage interactions between the teachers and students, too.
- Technological infrastructure: The online school itself should have a reliable, simple to use and available technological infrastructure as well as offer satisfactory technical support for its students.
- Credit transfers: The students should be able to transfer their credits from online schools to traditional schools, partly through accreditation, and vice versa. We suggest that parents and their children should check the enrolment agreement for credit transfers.
- Quality of instruction: The teachers are licensed by the concerned licensing authority such as the state. They should be well-trained in the generally accepted teaching principles and practices. Parents may want to check on the teachers’ professional qualifications – degree, experience, and track record, among others.
- School performance and reputation: We considered the overall reputation of online schools based on several factors. These include graduation rates, student outcomes, student and parent satisfaction, and performance in statewide and nationwide tests.
- Support services: Positive academic performance is closely related to satisfactory student support, and it applies to online students, too. We reviewed the availability of tutoring services, learning coaches, and guidance counselors, as well as the presence of a parent network and alumni services.
- Socialization opportunities: While socialization opportunities may not seem vital in online high schools, these are strongly appreciated for the students’ positive overall development. We checked whether the schools offered field trips, group projects, and clubs that students can participate in.

What types of equipment must students have to complete online high school?
Keep in mind that the technology requirements are specific to each online high school. Parents must then ask about the hardware and software requirements before enrolling their children. These requirements are usually a mix of the basics, such as a complete computer set up and specialized software for course-specific work (e.g., art or information technology software).
With that said, online high schools ask their students to meet these basic hardware and software requirements.
- A fully functioning desktop or laptop is a must for online classes. But your computer should also comply with the specific hardware and software requirements, such as RAM, video and audio card, and office software. The latter includes word processing, spreadsheet, and slide presentation programs, which are the most commonly used for online classes.
Your computer should also have a compatible web camera, headset with a microphone, and a CD/DVD drive, among others. You may add gizmos to your basic computer setups, such as a social media output channel, a projector, and a presentation clicker, but these are usually optional.
If you have limited financial resources to comply with these requirements, you may be able to ask for assistance to address the issue. Many private online high schools also include the cost of equipment in their tuition, so be sure to ask about it, too.
- A good Internet connection is also a must. Indeed, there won’t be online classes if not for high-speed Internet connections! This is vital in online classes since smooth audio, and video conversations are instrumental in learning. Just imagine being in an online class with choppy connections – your concentration won’t be at its best, and you’ll think that it’s a waste of time.
You should also be able to upload and download files quickly on your computer. You may have to upgrade or call your service provider in case these tasks aren’t being accomplished as quickly as necessary (i.e., slow Internet connection).
Many online high schools also give their students books and modules to study and use as a reference, too.
How involved must parents be in the online high school setup?
The biggest challenge for parents of students attending online high school programs is striking the right balance between providing guidance and giving freedom to their children. On the one hand, they have to monitor their respective children’s weekly and monthly progress; a task made easier when the school provides regular progress reports. They also have to check their children’s assignments, tests, and lessons and ensure their completion.
On the other hand, parents have to give their children a certain level of autonomy, accountability, and responsibility for their academic performance. The higher the grade level, the greater the level of freedom so that students have ample opportunity to hone their academic, time management, and real-world skills. These skills are crucial factors for success at the secondary and post-secondary levels and life in general.
What then is the right balance? There is no one-size-fits-all answer since every student has his or her own unique needs and wants about online education! You and your child have to discuss the ground rules for online education, including the level of involvement acceptable for both parties.
You may, for example, find that your involvement in your children’s online learning is limited to the evenings and weekends when discussions about lessons, challenges, and progress can be made. At other times, your children will likely spend between five and six hours every day on independent study and virtual lessons. Your participation may be limited to checking their daily schedule and ensuring their compliance with the academic requirements.
You, the parent, must also take full advantage of the support services provided by the online high school! These include guidance counselors, parents-teachers’ association, and the teaching staff, even the non-teaching staff. You may also join a parent network where online training programs, live events, and conferences are provided to build a parent-centric community.
What makes for academic success in an online high school program?
For students planning to enroll or are already enrolled in an online high school program, you have to remember that your academic performance is largely your responsibility. You have to be willing and ready to succeed as a high school student, as well as maintain a balance of setting big dreams while keeping your feet grounded.
Aside from your computer operations knowledge and skills, you should also have mental and emotional skills suitable for online learning. But remember, too, that these skills are just as useful in the real world, such as in college and the workplace. It’s never too early to strengthen these skills, too!
- Persistence is key to your academic success because, as the saying goes, Rome wasn’t built in a day. You have to stick to the mathematical equation, for example, until you get its concept and solve the problem. You can take breaks, of course, but you shouldn’t quit.
Tip: Don’t hesitate to seek help from your classmates and teachers. Learning is better when it’s a shared journey.
- Effective time management is also a vital skill in your success. While many online high schools have set daily schedules, many others allow flexibility in the students’ learning schedule. You may want to procrastinate because the deadline’s a long way off, but resist the temptation – soon enough, that deadline is in your face.
- Strong communication skills are also essential in online learning, as it is in face-to-face learning. You won’t be able to pick up on the non-verbal cues of your teacher and classmates, and they won’t pick up on yours either. You must then state your concerns and answers clearly, as well as use the right emoticons and other non-text tools for this purpose.
Of course, your communication skills should include proficient reading and writing skills. You may want to take speed reading and typing classes if you’re having issues in these areas.
